Updated betting on the BMW PGA

It’s always interesting to look at the odds prior to a top golf event and then see how they fluctuate after the first round in regards to golf betting. Earlier in the week, this site commented on the pre tournament betting for the BMW PGA and at the time, Luke Donald was the early favourite.

The first round teed off in typical British conditions with a mix of rain and sunshine, coupled with a strong wind that affected scores throughout the day. The good news is that those who had placed an early bet on Donald are now looking very smug indeed.

Throughout some high scores, the world number two shot a near perfect seven under par 64 to lead by two shots from Johan Edfors and those betting odds have now shortened to 11/8 with several bookmakers including Coral and Sky Bet. Luke Donald is in the form of his life so is there any point looking beyond him at the rest of the field?

For a while, Colin Montgomerie rolled back the years to threaten the lead but after he fell away to finish at two under par, a bet on the genial Scot could be used for nostalgia purposes only.

While some of the other big names have fallen away completely, it may be surprising to learn that you can still get as much as 50/1 on Edfors with Totesport. While this tournament may ultimately end in a comprehensive Luke Donald triumph, an each way gamble on the second placed Edfors could be worth taking while there’s still time.
